He mostly wintered there, but he stayed there for a few summers. The rule was that you had to honk as you arrived just in case Phil was walking around naked because it was so damn hot.

Seems like the natural solution to the extreme heat! Went I was 8/9 years old we dug “forts” underground. Old plywood and two by fours to shore up the walls and roof. Even in Michigan it was cool in the summer warmed by candles in the winter. Seems to me it would be do able? Who owns the land? Are there any restrictions? Codes, building or otherwise?

I was thinking about selling my place here in WV and making a go ot it out in Slab City with my old 65 dodte motorhome when it’s finished with my remodeling, thought about brainstorming some kind of box trailer utility set up to bring some kind of electric and water out there, might have to start thinking about how to keep the citizens cool as well! Hope you made it and I REALLY hope you might still be out there when I DO finally get there. Just look fir “Lost in the 50’s” on the side of the ‘home. Be blessed.

This generation of people are absolutely clueless on survival skills, they’re going to wind up eating each other in the long run. Anyway . There’s a Hurricane headed to So Cal… I hope Slab city can capture all that water and cover up and secure al their belongings before that storm hits.. It could be a Tropical Storm but will still let loose a whole lot of rain! GOOD LUCK YA’LL!

My favorite area is East Jesus, a dada art community. I haven’t had much contact with the native residents but what little I’ve had has been pleasant. I always go in the winter do haven’t experienced the extreme heat. Bombay Beach on the Salton Sea is a kindred community with lots of off the wall art.

Do you have a smartphone? Google maps will take you right there. Otherwise go to the middle of Niland and head east. I think there is only one road that goes out of town in that direction.

You can just show up. I was there Jan 30th, 2023. Keep your vehicle in good repair at all times while there and you’ll have bargaining power. Not many people have cars there, but people always need rides into town to go shopping. Once word gets around a new person showed up with a car, you’ll have people asking you for rides into town. You can bargain with them for what they have – cash, food or whatever, or they’ll buy stuff for you while they shop.

I visited Slab City on Jan 31st, 2023. I visited the Internet Cafe, and the guy who runs the place invited me into his home and shared his life story with me. I was so moved by how genuine he was, and he was such a nice guy. I just want to say thank you to the guy at the Internet Cafe who opened his home to me, made coffee for me, and told me his life story. If you go to Slab City, make sure to donate. They accept cash, and people who donate are usually treated pretty well. I have no regrets I visited there and would gladly go back again for another visit.
